At RVA Local Spotlight, we believe thriving local businesses and strong communities go hand in hand.
Every postcard we mail includes one complimentary advertising space dedicated to a local nonprofit, school, or community organization making a positive difference. It is our way of giving back to the neighborhoods we serve while helping residents discover meaningful opportunities to support causes close to home.
Why we created it
Important work deserves to be seen.
Local organizations do important work every day, but many do not have the advertising budget needed to reach thousands of households.
The RLS Community Commitment gives one selected organization that opportunity at no cost.
The featured organization may use the space to promote a fundraiser, announce an event, recruit volunteers, request donations, share an immediate community need, or bring attention to a positive local initiative.
Our purpose is simple: strengthen Virginia communities by helping residents discover and support organizations doing meaningful work close to home.
What every postcard includes
One space. Every postcard. Every edition.
Every RVA Local Spotlight postcard includes one complimentary Community Commitment advertisement. The organization is selected by RVA Local Spotlight for that edition and receives the same opportunity to be seen inside thousands of established local households as the businesses featured on the postcard.
This is a continuing RLS commitment—not a temporary promotion and not leftover advertising space.
Organizations and initiatives we may feature
Practical support, close to home.
- Local schools and educational programs
- School-supply, backpack, clothing, and classroom-resource drives
- Food banks, food drives, and meal-assistance programs
- Homelessness relief and family-assistance initiatives
- Animal rescues, shelters, and adoption events
- Youth sports leagues and recreation programs
- Community cleanups and neighborhood-improvement efforts
- Veteran and senior support programs
- Other nonpartisan, family-friendly charitable efforts that directly serve local communities
How organizations are selected
Selected carefully by RLS.
Each Community Commitment feature is selected by RVA Local Spotlight. We may also consider recommendations from residents, businesses, schools, and local organizations, but a recommendation does not guarantee placement.
To keep the postcard welcoming, useful, and appropriate for a broad neighborhood audience, RLS focuses on practical, nonpartisan, family-friendly causes that provide direct community support.
RVA Local Spotlight reserves the right to approve or decline any organization, advertisement, message, event, or campaign at its sole discretion. The Community Commitment space is not available for political advocacy, religious promotion, ideological campaigns, divisive social issues, or other content RLS determines may be controversial or inconsistent with the purpose of bringing neighbors together around direct community needs.

For Community Organizations
A selected organization receives valuable exposure inside thousands of households without having to fund the advertising campaign on its own.
For Local Businesses
Businesses appear on a postcard that offers residents more than advertising. The Community Commitment gives households an additional reason to notice, keep, and revisit the card while positioning participating businesses alongside genuine community good.
For the Community
More residents become aware of practical ways to give, attend, volunteer, donate, adopt, or participate—helping local support reach the people and organizations that need it.

All recommendations are reviewed by RLS. Submission does not guarantee selection or placement.
