Neighbors volunteering together at a local school-supply drive

More Than Advertising. A Promise to the Places We Call Home.

Some of the most important work in our neighborhoods is done quietly—by people who rarely have the budget to be heard. Every RLS card sets aside one complimentary space to change that.

At RVA Local Spotlight, we believe strong local businesses and strong communities rise together.

That's why every card we mail includes one complimentary advertising space given to a local nonprofit, school, or community organization doing meaningful work near you. It costs the organization nothing. It's simply part of who we are—and our way of helping the causes down the street reach the neighbors who would gladly stand behind them.

Why we created it

Important work deserves to be seen.

Every day, local organizations feed families, supply classrooms, rescue animals, and lift up neighbors in need. Most do it on almost nothing—and without the budget to reach the thousands of households who would happily help if they only knew.

The RLS Community Commitment gives one of those organizations that reach, free of charge.

The featured organization can use the space however it helps most: promote a fundraiser, announce an event, recruit volunteers, ask for donations, share an urgent need, or simply put a good cause in front of more people.

Our purpose is simple: to help neighbors discover—and rally behind—the organizations working to make our communities stronger.

What every card includes

One space. Every card. Every edition.

Every RVA Local Spotlight card includes one complimentary Community Commitment advertisement. The featured organization is chosen by RLS for that edition and is seen inside the same thousands of established local households as the businesses on the card.

This is a standing commitment—not a temporary promotion, and not leftover space we happened to have. We build it into every card on purpose.

  • Food banks, food drives, and meal-assistance programs
  • Homelessness relief and family-assistance initiatives

  • Veteran and senior support programs
  • Other nonpartisan, family-friendly charitable efforts that directly serve local communities

How organizations are selected

Chosen with care.

Each Community Commitment feature is selected by RVA Local Spotlight. We welcome recommendations from residents, businesses, schools, and organizations—though a recommendation doesn't guarantee a spot.

To keep every card welcoming and useful for a whole neighborhood, we focus on practical, nonpartisan, family-friendly causes that provide direct community support. We review each recommendation personally, and we reserve the right to approve or decline any organization, message, event, or campaign based on space, timing, community relevance, and fit with the spirit of the Community Commitment.

Why it matters

One commitment. Four kinds of good.

For Residents

You learn about the needs, events, and volunteer opportunities right in your own community—and easy ways to help.

For Community Organizations

A local cause reaches thousands of nearby households without spending a dollar it doesn't have.

For Local Businesses

Your business appears on a card that gives neighbors more than advertising—one more reason to notice it, keep it, and return to it, with your name standing beside real community good.

For the Community

More neighbors give, attend, volunteer, donate, adopt, and show up—so local support reaches the people and organizations who need it most.

Our promise

Every card. Every neighborhood. Every edition.

One complimentary Community Commitment space. One more chance to strengthen the place we all call home.

Because when our communities thrive, local families and local businesses thrive with them.
